Drawing and Painting in the Upper Paleolithic Period

Drawing and painting have been going on for a long time. The Upper Paleolithic includes art that was created between 40,000 and 35,000 years ago. Simple geometric shapes and hand stencils are notfigurative cave paintings.

In Europe, Spain, and France, cave representations of animals are found. Painting has its roots in caves and rock faces. The Chauvet and Lascaux caves are believed to be 32,000 years old.

The paintings on the walls and ceilings are of animals in shades of red, brown, yellow, and black. The Italian school influenced painters in northern Europe. The most successful painters of the times are Jan van Eyck from Belgium, Hans Holbein the Younger from Germany and the Elder of the Netherlands.

They used the glazing technique to achieve the depth and luminosity. Photography is the process of taking pictures. The light patterns reflected or emitted from objects are recorded onto a sensitive medium or storage chip.

The process is done through mechanical shutters or electronically timed exposure of the photon. The process of planning, designing, and constructing buildings is called architecture. The material form of buildings are often seen as works of art.

Fine Art and Commercial Art

People still make distinctions between fine art and everything else in the visual arts. It can change depending on who you're talking to. An argument could be made that most art is commercial because an artist needs to sell art in order to stay a working artist. Commercial art is usually created to sell something else, such as an advertisement.

Visual Arts

The visual arts are made for the audience to see. They are usually complete before the audience sees them. The performing arts are performed in front of an audience.

The visual arts include two-dimensional and three-dimensional arts, for example, the decorative arts, drawing, graphic design, painting, photography, printmaking, and sculpture. A visual artist is a maker of art. A visual artist with any of the specialties could work in many different ways.

A painter can use watercolors, oil paints, or other paints. A photographer might specialize in black and white photography or create color photographs that were manipulated by a photo-editing software program. A sculptor could use wood, clay, marble, granite, or wood to create sculptures.

A visual artist who draws might use a variety of materials. A visual artist can hold a number of different jobs, which are often done by self-employed visual artists. A visual artist who makes prints, takes photographs, or paints may become a book illustrator.

A graphic designer could join an advertising agency or become a web designer. A number of visual artists become teachers, either in school districts, colleges or universities, or in art studios or museums with art education programs. Other visual artists can become critics.

Art: Artists in the 21'70

It is more common for artists to teach or do other types of work to help supplement their income when they first start out, even if they become enormously successful like Picasso and Warhol. Picasso began in childhood, like Grandma Moses. You can be an artist if you want to, you can either attend an art school or self-taught.

The outlook for craft and fine artists over the next decade is good, but it depends on the state of the economy and whether people feel like spending their money on a discretionary item like art. Art sales do better in good economic times when the economy is not as bad. Most craft and fine artists work full time, although part time and variable work schedules are also common.

Many artists hold other jobs because it may be difficult to rely on their income from selling art. Artists may work long hours to meet deadlines. Rejection is a big part of being an artist.

If you apply for grants, you will be granted artist residencies. You should keep contacting galleries to show your work. Make connections and keep networking.

The Street Art of Berlin

Street art is a very modern example of art in action. The reactions to the mural in the city were very different because of the differences between East and West Berlin. Art can encompass a wide range of forms, from film, music, theatre, and pop culture, all of which aim to entertain and make people happy.

When a film is made for a specific audience or purpose, the art starts to change. Films can be used to spread awareness. Songs can be composed in a way that brings out certain emotions, gives inspiration, or increases the spirits of people.

Visual Metaphors

A visual metaphor is a representation of a word through a picture. Commercial ads, photography, and television shows all use visual metaphors to create meaning. The function of visual metaphors depends on what they are being used for.

The goal of a film is to entertain an audience while the goal of an advertisement is to get a consumer to buy something. Both rely on the audience to engage. When used with intention, visual metaphors are an incredibly effective tool.

Visual Culture

A visual culture is a term that describes the visible and intangible characteristics of a body as a whole. The evidence of visual culture is not limited to the most obvious and direct forms of visual expression. The term is useful for determining what aspects of the visual culture of a person reveal about them.

The Art of Time

For thousands of years, art has been a part of human culture. It is a medium that can be used to express an artist's view of reality to other people. Most art reflects at least some of the cultural norms and beliefs of the time in which it was created. Many great works of art are conceptual time capsule, both in regards to the artist's mind and to society at large.
