Historical Novelties

Historical fiction is a genre of fiction that takes place in the past. The term historical romance is a synonym for the term narrative, but it can also be applied to other types of narrative, including theatre, opera, cinema, and television. Major historic events are mostly off-stage in some historical novels, while the fictional characters are in the world where those events occur.

Kidnapped is a book about private adventures set against the backdrop of the Jacobite troubles in Scotland. The Gordon Riots and A Tale of Two Cities in the French Revolution are set in Charles Dickens's novel, "Barney Rudge." The accuracy of historical elements has been questioned in some works.

John Barth and Thomas Pynchon have both written novels that mix historical characters and settings with invented history and fantasy. Some writers create historical fiction. Colleen McCullough created the Masters of Rome.

Historical narratives can be found in comics and graphic novels. There are elements of prehistorical in jungle comics. Frank Miller's 300 is centered around the Battle of Thermopylae, while Eric Shanower's Age of Bronze series retells the story of the Trojan War.

A Tale of Two Lists

You are a friend of lists. List common names in your world. You can make lists of town names.

If you need some nonsense in a pinch, look for indexes of plant and gem names. You can't have too many extra lists. Some people are more into maps than others.

If you feel called to create a map that shows every last village and valley, then go for it. If you don't mind fussing over details, just write down a few notes about how far away things are. Before you start with the story, have a sense of space and terrain.

If it doesn't sound like fun to you, you don't have to create a whole fantasy language. If you want to make a language, or if you just want to come up with a few fanciful names, you should take a moment to think about how those two root words can be used in different combinations. You know what your tavern is called, but how does it smell?

Your forest is haunted, but what shade of green are the leaves? What are the tastes of the locals? Get specific about your descriptions so you can evoke a real place.
