Art History: A Tool for Mid-Management

Art history is a major part of iconography. It looks at the symbolism of works of arts. Art historians identify the visual elements of a painting and interpret them.

Art historians are interested in what the works of art looked like at the time they were created. It is a way to learn about the past. Most of the skills can be used outside of the field of art.

Visual Art

It is visual art that can be seen. Fine art, contemporary art, decorative arts, and crafts are all visual art. Fine arts include drawings, paintings, sculpture, printmaking, etc.

Photography, animation, and performance art are included in the contemporary art category. Ceramics, glass paintings, pottery, mosaic art, etc. are included. The visual art can include tattoos, face painting, graphic and fashion designing.

The history of visual arts is long. The first miniature painting in India was created in the form of examples of religious texts on Buddhism and Jainism. The style of painting in the west was influenced by the Persian style.

Art, in any form, is a treat to the eyes. You can see, feel and touch visual art. India, visual arts have existed for a long time. Europeans came to India with their thoughts and ideas.

Drawing and Painting in the Upper Paleolithic Period

Drawing and painting have been going on for a long time. The Upper Paleolithic includes art that was created between 40,000 and 35,000 years ago. Simple geometric shapes and hand stencils are notfigurative cave paintings.

In Europe, Spain, and France, cave representations of animals are found. Painting has its roots in caves and rock faces. The Chauvet and Lascaux caves are believed to be 32,000 years old.

The paintings on the walls and ceilings are of animals in shades of red, brown, yellow, and black. The Italian school influenced painters in northern Europe. The most successful painters of the times are Jan van Eyck from Belgium, Hans Holbein the Younger from Germany and the Elder of the Netherlands.

They used the glazing technique to achieve the depth and luminosity. Photography is the process of taking pictures. The light patterns reflected or emitted from objects are recorded onto a sensitive medium or storage chip.

The process is done through mechanical shutters or electronically timed exposure of the photon. The process of planning, designing, and constructing buildings is called architecture. The material form of buildings are often seen as works of art.

Mycenean Art

The term "Mycenae" is sometimes used to describe the culture of the Greek city in the Greek Peloponnese. The influence of Minoan culture gave rise to Mycenean art, which gradually achieved its own balance between the lively naturalism of Crete and the more formal artistic idiom of the mainland. Myceneans were warriors, so their art was designed to honor their rulers.

It included a number of tholos tombs filled with gold work. Impressionists wanted to reproduce fleeting moments outdoors. If an object appeared dark purple, the artist painted it purple.

Untangling Art

There were many factors that went into the creation of art or architecture. It is fun to untangle them and see how they connect to other art.
